When sage Mrikandu and wife Marduvti prayed to lord Shiva as they were childless – lord Shiva appeared before them.
He told them that they could have a spiritually enlightened child who will live only for 16 years or a selfish child who will have a long life.
The couple opted for the former and was soon blessed with Markendaya, their son. He was, as promised by Lord Shiva, a spiritually enlightened child.
But soon he turned 16, and while his parents worried, he told them that he is going to meditate to lord using the Mrityunjaya Mantra.
So Markendaya decided to meditate in front of a Shiva lingam and was in the midst of his prayers when Lord Yama, the god of death appeared before him with his noose.
Yama incensed at the idea of being ignored by a mortal, commanded Markendaya to appear before him and pay obeisance.
Markendaya was in the middle of chanting, this incensed Yama further so he threw the noose at Markendaya to drag him away to the underworld.
Unfortunately, the noose also fell around Lord Shiva who became so incensed that he decided to kill Yama on the spot. But on the other gods imploring on Yama’s behalf, lord Shiva spared him.
He further informed Yama that Markendaya will forever remain a 16 year old and that chanting the Mrityunjaya mantra had indeed protected him.
To this day, it is widely believed that Markendaya, who became a sage in his own right, dwells in one of the forests pan India.
